Cut. A Short Film By Royston Tan.

January 30, 2008

This is a short film poking fun at Singapore’s censorship board which is rather amusing. I have to admit, since I watched Royston Tan’s ‘15′ years ago, he’s left a very deep impression on me. I try as far as possible to watch his work.

Enjoy.

I wouldn’t have noticed it before, but I like how he cuts from scene to scene (deliberately, of course), and how Neo Swee Lin, obviously playing the censorship board keeps so deliciously silent (*knowing wink*) throughout most of the film, lol…

Chinese Television Reuses WoW Maps In Military Documentary

January 29, 2008

Taken off the World Of Raids website:

China Military TV Channel broadcasted a military documentary about war exercises that took place around the world last year. One of the maps they used showed Turkey, Iraq and Iran (from left to right on the map below).

chinese-map.jpg

Now compare it to Arathi Highlands as seen in WoW:

arathi-highlands.jpg

Did they think this would go unnoticed with so many WoW players around the world?

Lol…read the original post here (varietyasiaonline).

I know WoW has made a deep impression worldwide (I mean 10 million players deep, yes count them), but this is bordering on hardcore.

Complaints Choir of Singapore

January 29, 2008

Excerpt taken off Mr. Brown’s recent post on his blog:

“I see such media coverage as growing awareness that we are not the same old dull cultural desert but rapidly gaining international mindshare as an exciting, vibrant and creative city.”

- Dr Lee Boon Yang, Minister For Information, Communications And The Arts, referring to the Smithsonian magazine article “Singapore Swing” (subtitled, “Peaceful and prosperous, Southeast Asia’s famously uptight nation has let its hair down”)

Apparently, the irony of the situation was that the foreign members of this choir was not allowed to perform in public, so they ended up performing in private. At the Old Parliament House debating chamber, no less. Lol.

Lyrics (via chillycraps.com) for you to sing along:

We get fined for almost anything
Drivers won’t give chance when you want to change lane
The indoors are cold, the outdoors are hot;
And the humid air, it wrecks my hair
Those answering machines always make you hold
Only to hang up on you

When a pregnant lady gets on the train
Everyone pretends to be asleep
I’m stuck with my parents till I’m 35
Cause I can’t apply for HDB
We don’t recycle any plastic bags
But we purify our pee

*chorus:
What’s wrong with Singapore?
Losing always makes me feel so sore
Cause if you’re not the best
Then you’re just one of the rest

My oh my Singapore
What exactly are we voting for?
What’s not expressly permitted
is prohibited

“Ooh”

When I’m hungry at the food court, I see
People chope seats with their tissue paper
To the auntie staying upstairs:
Your laundry’s dripping on my bed sheets
Please don’t squat on the toilet seats
And don’t clip your nails on MRT

Stray cats get into noisy affairs
At night my neighbor makes weird animal sounds
People put on fake accents to sound posh
And queue up 3 hours for donuts
Will I ever live till eighty five
to collect CPF?

*chorus

Singaporeans too kiasu! (so scared to lose)
Singaporeans too kiasi! (so scared to die)
Singaporeans too kiabor! (scared of their wives)
Maybe we’re just too stressed out! (even the kids)

“Ooh”

Old National Library was replaced by an ugly tunnel
Singaporean men can’t take independent women
People blow their nose into the swimming pool (and pee too)
And fall asleep on my shoulder in the train

Singapore’s national bird is the crane (the one with yellow steel girders)
Real estate agents’ leaflets clogging up my mailbox (en bloc, en bloc, en bloc, en bloc)
Why can’t we be buried when we die?
No one wants to climb Bukit Timah with me

*chorus

There are not enough public holidays
My neighbor sings KTV all night
Wedding dinners never start on time
My hair is always cut shorter than I want
Channel 5 commercials are way too long
Why do men turn bald?

At first it was to speak more mandarin
Then it was to speak proper English
What’s wrong with my powderful Singlish?

People sit down during rock concerts
We have to pay for tap water at restaurants
ERP gantries are everywhere
But I can still see traffic jams on the road
All the bus stops have tilted benches
Cannot access playboy.com

*chorus

Disclaimer: I’m not politically motivated in any way. In fact, I’m one of the many Singaporeans classified as politically apathetic. I just saw this whole incident as amusing, and posted it to share with friends and family.

The Magdalena Artist Proof Statue by CS Moore Studios

January 28, 2008

Yay, I managed to lay my grubby paws on this beauty!

mag-right.jpg

mag-right-upper-half.jpg

The sculpt for this piece is amazing. I’ve heard of CS Moore’s amazing skill when it comes to sculpting the female anatomy, but finally owning a copy of his work, and being able to scrutinise The Magdalena in detail really hits home the point the sheer amount of work that must have gone into molding her.

mag-front-upper-half.jpg

mag-top.jpg

The paint work for this piece is also amazing. Nice matt black finishes for her cloak, and a beautiful glossy red/black combination really makes for a nice contrast!

mag-back.jpg

The composition isn’t much, but she does come across as very mysterious, with an air of danger about her. Dark and brooding, with her cloak pooling at her feet, I think ambient lighting best accentuates the mood of this statue, however, unless you have a very good camera, ambient lighting won’t do much to bring out the beauty of her colours.

Unfortunately, she stands at 14″ tall, and my cabinet only takes up to 12″ height.  :(

Until I figure out how to display her, she’s going back into her box.

In case you’re interested in finding out more about this character, you can read more about The Magdalena here. I personally didn’t read the comics, but I simply had to own this statue when I saw the incredible amount of detail and the beautiful paint on her.

Singapore Toy and Comic Convention

January 27, 2008

Oooh, I just found out about this:

stcc.jpg

I wonder if this convention will be any good, although I wouldn’t be holding my breath. All my previous experience with these kind of conventions in Singapore have been very disappointing. They don’t even come near the kind of standards of the US/Jap/German conventions that I read about.

The most recent case in point being the recent gaming convention held in Singapore. Nothing interesting to be seen.

Project MiniMe: Entry 0008

January 26, 2008

Week 27 and all is well.

  • MiniMe’s brain continues its rapid growth. Synn and I have to keep remembering to share music, conversation, and even books with him. We’ve been trying some simple communication techniques from the ante-natal class but it seems like MiniMe might be the strong, silent type around people. He always seems to stop moving when I talk to him.  :(
  • Response to sound grows more consistent toward the end of the seventh month, when the network of nerves to the ear is complete. MiniMe’s hearing continues to develop and he may start to recognize Synn’s and my voice.
  • Lungs continue to grow and prepare for functioning outside of the womb. Each day in the womb greatly increases survival rates!
  • He also continues to take small breaths and although he’s only breathing in water and not air, it’s still good practice for when he’s born.
  • Eyelids are now open more. MiniMe can distinguish between light and dark.
  • Retinas have formed.
  • MiniMe might be about 36.6cm and 875gm now.
  • Synn and I went for our second class today. We learnt some breathing techniques for Synn for when she’s in labour, while I learnt the areas to massage her. (Which I already know from common sense and have been doing that for her occasionally since before we concieved anyway.)

Oh, and we had a quick demonstration on how to swaddle a baby. The baby Mrs. Wong used was SO cute, omg. lol…

    Changi Airport Terminal 3

    January 23, 2008

Hot on the heels of the delivery of the world’s first A380 to Singapore Airlines was the opening of Singapore’s Changi Airport Terminal 3.

I had the opportunity to visit the terminal while waiting for my flight to Taiwan.

    entrance.jpg

My first thought when I entered the Row 6 area for SQ’s business class passengers was ‘Whuh…?’

    flower.jpg

Behold, the object of my confusion. It could be a flower trying to do neck exercises. Or it could be one of the turbines from any number of the planes taking off or landing at Changi. Or it could be something else entirely. Maybe.

After getting over my initial amusement, I sauntered over to the check-in counter, got myself checked in then proceeded to check out the rest of the terminal. One thing that interested me was the way the terminal has been designed to let in diffuse natural light beautifully. I’m still constantly wondering how they get lighting in at night, seeing as how I don’t see any tubes or bulbs for electric lighting.

    shades.jpg

Here is the terminal’s wall of green, with a nice waterfall. You wouldn’t guess it, but there’s a restroom behind all that green. Sneaky.

    green-wall.jpg

Making my way over to the loo and noticing the nice cool lighting they use for the male/female signs.

    toilet-corridor.jpg

And here is the much talked about restroom, with a view of the outside while you answer nature’s call.

    urinals.jpg

     toilet-view-inside.jpg

Even the basins and taps are glammed up.

    wash-area.jpg  nice-taps.jpg

Heck, even the fire extinguishers are getting condominiums:

    fire-extinguishers.jpg

I totally loved the departure area. Check it out.

    departures.jpg

The font for the word ‘Departure’ and the way the whole area is set up reminds me of the Daily Planet building in the Superman cartoons. Almost like a 1940s kind of look. Pretty cool, if you ask me.

Being in Business Class has its advantages:

    kris-lounge-5.jpg

The T3 Silverkris lounge is much better than the T2 one. The T3 one is larger, brighter, and has a huge ass 42″ LCD TV.

    kris-lounge-1.jpg

Food selection is slightly better than the T2 one. Here is my food selection below:

    kris-lounge-3.jpg  kris-lounge-2.jpg

One thing I can never resist is the Schweppes Bitter Lemon that’s always always available in the SQ lounges. I can never be bothered to buy them from the supermarket, but dammit everytime I travel I never pass up the chance to drink this.

We get chilled mugs in this lounge too. And an automatic ice dispenser. Too cool.

After which, it’s up onto the plane for me. ^^

    boarding-area-2.jpg

Boarding waiting areas are super large and bright. No lack of seats as compared to the old terminals.

Didn’t get pictures, but this is how I passed the time:

1 glass orange juice, 1 cup hot chocolate, 1 packet assorted nuts, 3 sticks of satay, 1 appetiser dish avocado prawn salad, 1 main course sea bass, 1 bowl Ben&Jerry’s Cherry Garcia ice cream, 2 glasses unsweetened soy bean milk, 1 very very large peach. All this in 90min. I even managed to squeeze in some reading in the form of a T3 magazine. After which, was some well deserved snooze time. All that eating and reading makes one very tired. ^^

The pilot’s announcement that he was starting our descent woke me up.

    grrr.

    Very nice flight, though.

The flight back was similarly uneventful, and I was similarly fattened:

2 cups hot chocolate, 1 packet assorted nuts, 1 appetiser chicken caesar salad, 1 beef fillet stuffed with wild shrooms, 1 bowl Movenpick Rum & Raisin ice cream, 2 glasses unsweetened soy bean milk, 1 banana.

Oh, and I watched a rather blah ‘The Nanny Diaries’ (Scarlett Johansson is so HOT.) and half of ‘Rush Hour 3′.

Remember, SQ Business Class is your friend.
